The new emergency room simulator at OHSU may help them win an $11 billion Department of Defense contract. The state-of-the-art simulator reproduces symptoms of disease in a mannequin to give healthcare providers and students opportunities to practice diagnosing and treating illness. The simulator records the mannequin’s medical data such as heartbeat and blood pressure and automatically sends it to the medical record using a version of the Epic Electronic Health Record. The Department of Defense has several records systems that don’t communicate well with each other and would like a new system. They may grant OHSU $11 billion to fund debugging the hospital’s Epic system.
