Chamber comments on Cuba sanction changes

Carlos Gutierrez, chairman of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s U.S.-Cuba Business Council,  issued the following statement regarding the Obama administration’s further amendments to Cuba sanctions regulations:

“The administration’s announcement is a welcomed step forward in the pursuit of greater opportunity for the U.S. private sector to collaborate with Cuba. These amendments offer important pathways to enhance collaboration in science and medicine; to improve crop yields through advanced technology and access to global value chains; and to give greater access to citizens in both countries to certain consumer goods.

“Today, U.S. companies can do business in Cuba and with the Cuban people more easily and effectively than at any point in the last 50 years. However, much more needs to be achieved in the bilateral space. We are optimistic that the Cuban government will continue to reform their economic model in order to increase prosperity and the ability for U.S. companies to operate in the market.”

The U.S.-Cuba Business Council works with the U.S. Congress, the U.S. and Cuban public and private sectors, and other key stakeholders to remove barriers to trade and create jobs, growth and prosperity in both countries. Additionally, the Council urges the Cuban government to continue to make policy changes to lessen government control or ownership of Cuban businesses.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world’s largest business federation representing the interests of more than 3 million businesses of all sizes, sectors, and regions, as well as state and local chambers and industry associations. Its International Affairs division includes more than 70 regional and policy experts and 25 country- and region-specific business councils and initiatives. The U.S. Chamber also works closely with 117 American Chambers of Commerce abroad.
