Lawmakers rated on business votes

Each Oregon Legislative Session, AOI records legislators’ votes (floor and in committee), on a selection of bills on which AOI took clear positions. These votes are compiled into a matrix, and legislators’ voting records are reported to our members throughout the state.

Votes are marked as Supportive or Opposed to AOI positions. As a member driven organization, AOI’s legislative positions are informed by policies developed in various member committees. These committees recommend policies to the AOI Board, which reviews and approves them.

AOI’s positions on legislation are clearly communicated to legislators through meetings, testimony, and floor letters. AOI Policies are reviewed by the Board of Directors annually, published, and distributed to each legislator. AOI staff and members rely on these policies to guide our responses to specific pieces of legislation.

Biennial Composite Scores

Oregon Legislative Assemblies are established in the state constitution as lasting two years, commending each odd numbered year and running through the following even numbered year. The 78th Oregon Legislative Assembly (2015-2016) has so far consisted of two Sessions:

  • 2015 Regular (long) Session
  • 2016 Regular (short) Session

The composite scores for this biennium are calculated as the weighted average score of the two Sessions. To find out who your legislators are, click here.

Although voting scores are important, they afford only a partial picture of a legislator’s performance. They do not assess the ways in which a legislator may have been of critical help in situations other than a committee or floor vote. The decision to hold a bill in committee or allow a vote, a legislator’s enthusiasm and help in championing a bill, or his or her willingness to speak to colleagues about the benefits or drawbacks of a specific measure are actions that literally cannot be quantified. Still, the Score Card provides the most objective insight possible on the only really quantifiable action every legislator must take – the vote.
