U.S. Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President for Government Affairs Bruce Josten issued the following statement today regarding the final Gainful Employment Rule released by the administration:

“The new ‘gainful employment’ regulation will limit educational opportunities for Americans and negatively impact our nation’s economy. Although the Department of Labor recently announced that there are 4.8 million job openings across the country, this rule limits people’s access to institutions of higher education that can provide them with the education and skills necessary to fill these jobs.

“For employers who lack skilled employees, diverse educational programs are needed to narrow the ever-increasing skills gap. Yet the programs targeted by the gainful employment regulations are among those most vital to building a skilled workforce. Many of these programs serve high numbers of women, low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students, as well as veterans and their families. They are also an important alternative to traditional higher education for many students that otherwise would not have access.

“Having an effective higher education system in the United States is essential to providing a strong foundation for both individual success and U.S. competitiveness. The U.S. Chamber remains committed to finding solutions to concerns around access, quality, and the cost of education in our country, which this rule is not designed to address.”
