Homebuyer Protection Bill Clears Oregon House on Unanimous Vote

A bill to protect homebuyers from inadvertently purchasing homes in which methamphetamines were manufactured passed the Oregon House of Representatives on a 57 -0 vote today. Sponsored by Rep. Gail Whitsett (R -Klamath Falls), House Bill 4065 a mends existing statute to require notice of a trustee’s sale in connection with the foreclosure of residential property to include language that warns prospective purchasers that the property may have been used in manufacturing methamphetamine.
“I’m pleased to see such broad bipartisan support of this common sense bill,” Rep. Whitsett said. “It’s widely known that the process for manufacturing methamphetamines involves chemical compounds that are known to be toxic. This will protect foreclosure auction homebuyers and their families from accidental exposure.” HB 4065 was drafted with the cooperation of various stakeholders, including representatives from the real estate and banking industries. It now heads to the Senate.
Rep. Whitsett has represented House District 5 6 since first being elected in 2012.
