With few exceptions, they post unrealistic markups over factory recommended prices, pay little attention to learning actual customer wants, disparage competition, and have spotty knowledge of their own brands. When accompanying customers on new-car tryout drives, the salespersons typically talk almost constantly and prevent the customer from focusing on the car itself. I attribute these marketing failures to ignorance of buyer psychology, ignorance of the economy and present auto market, and contempt for the customer.
