Supreme Court Justice to Visit Willamette University

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will visit the Willamette University College of Law in Salem on September 12 to  attend a number of public events, mark the law school’s 125th academic year and to kick-off a series of celebratory events.  Appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1993, the 75-year-old Ginsberg is the second woman to serve on the Supreme Court. In  2007, Forbes Magazine rated her as the 20th most powerful woman in the world and the most powerful female lawyer in the world.

Williamette University is dedicating the new Oregon Civic Justice Center and Ginsberg will participate in the dedication ceremony.  The Oregon Civic Justice Center is located on the corner of State  and Winter Street in Salem’s first public library built in 1912.  Willamette University bought the building in 2003, and the historic  landmark now houses important legal education programs andcommunity-based services that help connect the College of Lawwith state government and the broader Salem community.

Ginsburg will present “Presidential Power in the 21st Century” at noon at the Center for Law and Government’s.” In addition, expert  panelists will also examine the scope of presidential authority underthe U.S. Constitution. Registration for the symposium will begin at

8:30 a.m. and the program continues until 4:30 p.m. All events are open to the public.  Willamette University will honor Ginsburg with an honorary Doctor of Laws and Ginsburg will present the first lecture in Willamette University’s 2008–09 Atkinson Lecture Series in Smith Auditorium. Overflow seating and closed-circuit viewing will be available in the Mary Stuart Rogers Music Center.
